How to get Google reviews for your business (without cheating)

Reviews don't arrive on their own, not even for businesses that do good work. They arrive for the ones who ask, and hardly anyone asks.

Updated 27 October 2026

The short answer

Get the direct review link from your Business Profile and ask every customer for a review right after serving them, in person or by WhatsApp that same afternoon. Reply to every review, bad ones included. Don't buy reviews or trade them for discounts, and don't ask only the customers you know are happy: Google prohibits it, and fake reviews are also against consumer law.

Why they weigh so much on Google Maps

Google says it ranks local businesses by how well they match the search, by distance, and by how well known they are. You can't move the distance. Being known, partly you can, and that's where reviews come in: how many you have, your rating, and how long since the last one.

But it shows most in the person looking at the map. They see three hairdressers five minutes away, compare stars and read the top two reviews. If yours has four and the latest is two years old, it looks like you've closed. Even if you're fully booked every Saturday.

Where and when to ask

It all comes from the same link. In your Business Profile, look for the option to ask for reviews or share the review form: it gives you a short link that opens the star-rating window directly, without the customer having to find you on Maps. Save it in your phone's notes. You'll use it every day.

  1. In person, when they thank you

That's the moment: at the till, when you hand back the car keys, when the customer looks in the mirror and smiles. Something like this is enough: «If you liked it, it really helps me if you put it on Google. I'll send you the link». By email three weeks later, they've forgotten you.

  2. A QR code by the till

Turn the link into a QR code with any free generator and print it on a small sign. Let each customer scan it with their own phone. What we don't recommend is a shop tablet where everyone types their review: many come from the same device and Google may filter them out.

  3. A WhatsApp message a few hours later

If you work by appointment, like a physio or an electrician who goes to people's homes, you already have the number. A short message that afternoon works better than any sign. There's one to copy below.

  4. On the website and the receipt

A «Leave us a review» button on the site, near your phone number, and a line with the QR at the bottom of the receipt or invoice. This brings fewer reviews than asking in person, but it costs nothing and catches the repeat customer.

Ask once and don't chase. Someone who doesn't leave one after a friendly message won't after three, and may well end up annoyed.

How to reply, especially to bad ones

Reply to all of them. To good ones, with more than «Thanks»: mention what the person singled out. The reviewer barely reads your reply. The next customer does, the one who hasn't called yet.

Bad reviews tend to get bad replies because they're written in the heat of the moment, at eleven at night with the phone in hand. Wait until the next morning, then:

  • If they're right, admit it without long excuses and say what you've changed. A reply like that convinces more than ten five-star reviews.
  • If they're not, give your side with facts and no sarcasm. Don't accuse the customer of lying, even if you think it.
  • Take the rest private: «Message us on [phone] and we'll sort it out».
  • Don't share customer details they didn't mention themselves: what was done, when they came, what they paid. At a clinic or a physio this is even more sensitive.

A negative review that's true can't be deleted. That's fine: a 4.6 with sensible replies inspires more trust than a perfect five. The ones that break Google's rules, like insults, spam or someone who was never a customer, you can report from your profile. Google decides, takes its time, and doesn't always agree with you.

The shortcuts that end badly

They all work for a while. Then Google removes reviews in bulk, can put a notice on your profile saying it has removed fake reviews, block new ones for a period or, in serious cases, suspend the profile. What took you a year to collect goes in an afternoon.

  • Buying reviews. «50-review packs» usually come from accounts with no history, in batches, which is exactly what Google detects.
  • Giving something in return. A 10% discount, a free coffee or a prize draw for reviewers: even if the review is honest, Google prohibits incentivised reviews. Run promotions, just don't tie them to reviews.
  • Asking only happy customers. Asking «would you give us five stars?» first and sending the link only if they say yes is called review gating, and it's prohibited too. It's the most common mistake, because it looks harmless.
  • Writing them yourself, or having staff or your brother-in-law do it. Google's rules call that a conflict of interest, and Google cross-checks accounts and locations.
  • Posting fake reviews on competitors. Not you, and not someone you pay.

Where the website comes in

On the profile, people find you. On the website, they choose you, because that's where they see prices and photos before calling. And the site returns the favour: the review button is right there every time a customer comes back for your number.

If you put some Google reviews on your site, link to the profile so all of them can be seen. It convinces more than three testimonials with no surname that nobody can check, and it's what the law asks of you.

FAQ

Other questions about this

Can I delete a negative Google review?

No. You can only report it from your Business Profile if it breaks Google's rules, for example if it's abusive, spam, or written by someone who was never a customer. Google decides whether to remove it. If it's genuine, what's left is replying well, because everyone who comes after reads that reply.

Can I run a prize draw or give a discount to people who leave a review?

No. Google prohibits offering any incentive in exchange for a review, even if you don't ask for a good one. If it detects it, it can remove those reviews and others. Keep promotions separate.

Can my friends and family leave me reviews?

Better not. Google treats reviews from the owner, staff and close connections as a conflict of interest and can remove them. If a friend really is a customer the risk drops, but don't build your profile on it.

How many reviews do I need to rank well on Google Maps?

It depends on your area and category. Search Maps for what you sell and look at how many the top three have: that's your benchmark. And keep them coming, because a review from this month counts for more than ten from three years ago.

Can I ask all my customers by WhatsApp or email?

Yes, if you ask all of them and give nothing in return. Only message people who gave you their contact, normally because they're your customers. No bought lists.

Will you put the review link and the Google Maps link on my site?

Yes. We add a «Leave us a review» button, the link to your Maps profile and the same details as your profile so everything matches. A single payment, from €80, and the page is yours.
